High blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level are major risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is known to be involved in the regulation of these risks. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) DD genotype, which is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation, has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease. We examined the association of the ACE DD genotype with these metabolic abnormalities in Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes. A total of 323 Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes participated in this study. Using the DD genotype as a reference group, we compared the frequency of metabolic syndrome in subjects with an ACE I/D genotype.
